Melissa Etheridge Headlines Huge Michigan Cannabis Cup

Grammy Award-winning musician and cannabis activist Melissa Etheridge will take the stage in Clio, Michigan to celebrate the first all-medical Cannabis Cup there put together by the iconic magazine, High Times.

The two-day event is scheduled for the weekend of June 11-12 in Clio, Michigan, where qualified medical marijuana patients from any state are invited to check out a myriad of vendors, instructional seminars and musical performances all while medicating to their needs.

Michigan is again a medical marijuana battleground after the state’s Appeals Court ruled dispensaries illegal. Activists have turned in signatures to qualify an initiative legalizing safe retail access to medical cannabis, but the signatures may be disqualified under a new law in Michigan.

Etheridge is a cancer survivor who credits the use of medical cannabis in helping her get through chemotherapy treatment. The songwriter and guitarist now sells her own line of marijuana-infused wines.

“It needs to be legalized across the board,” Etheridge told Fortune in a 2015 interview. “Who draws the line of what’s medicinal? If a hardworking person comes home and they want to enjoy cannabis, who’s to say that it’s not medicine? It helps in many medicinal ways.”

Also scheduled are panel discussions on topics such as edibles, pediatrics, veterans, and Michigan’s pending marijuana legislation and ballot initiatives.

The main attraction, however, will be the show floor itself, which features a massive selection of vendors and booths rife with free samples and giveaways.

All of that will serve as prelude to the awards ceremony, which recognizes the finest flowers, edibles, concentrates, and marijuana products that the Midwest has to offer.

Now in its third year in Michigan, the 2016 event will be open strictly for medical marijuana patients ages 18 and over. Attendants with valid medical recommendations are invited to medicate freely throughout the entire festival grounds, whereas cannabis consumption was limited to an enclosed medication area in previous years. But don’t be discouraged if you don’t have a recommendation, as doctors will be on site for evaluations.

Passes are available for each day, while a VIP two-day pass guarantees ticket holders early entry, VIP lounge access, a goodie bag, and special seating for both the concert and awards ceremony.
